I constructed this animated map to show the movement of shipping from England, Netherlands and Spain to the rest of the world in 1770. It is a powerful practice that allows visualising data in a more dynamic way.
Another insightful way to represent ship movement was created using a stop motion animation practice in ArcGIS. It presents the movement of 3 ships departing from Spain and reaching Puerto Rico. It was used to find out which ship arrived first based on the routes it took. This can help in making decisions to find the fastest routes when shipping. However, other factors might have been the reason for example, harsh weather conditions, which could force the ship to change its direction. Never the less, visualising the data creatively can provide different prescriptive or more insights.
I like inventive projects so I decided to share this project as an example of what can be achieved with GIS.
